UNEP: Blueprint for a global framework for digital product information systems

The Global Framework for Digital Product Information Systems (DPIS) is a pioneering initiative aimed at creating a unified, interoperable system for product and sustainability data exchange. By harmonizing existing and emerging DPIS initiatives, including Digital Product Passports (DPPs), the framework will enable seamless data integration and foster a more transparent and sustainable global economy.

The Blueprint serves as a practical guide for the development of the DPIS Global Framework. It bridges the gap between the high-level principles and action on the ground. Specifically, the Blueprint…
  • Provides guidance and acts as a roadmap for the development and implementation of the DPIS Global Framework
  • Ensures equitable participation by delineating a development process that constantly and deliberately involves stakeholders worldwide in a co-creative process
  • A main goal here is the equitable inclusion of the Global South and SMEs into the emerging system of systems

Developed in 2024 with support from the Wuppertal Institute, the Blueprint for the DPIS Global Framework translates high-level principles into actionable steps, ensuring interoperability, inclusiveness, and long-term viability. It defines development guidelines, fosters stakeholder collaboration, and provides a roadmap for global implementation, with a strong emphasis on ensuring equitable participation, particularly for the Global South.

For the development of this blueprint several prior studies and stakeholder consultations were conducted. This initiative is built on extensive research and stakeholder engagement, including studies on circularity data, sustainability disclosure gaps, and technological barriers. The Blueprint integrates insights from regional consultations, expert reviews, and multi-stakeholder dialogues, ensuring a co-created approach to DPIS development.

As the project moves into its next phase, D4CE partners will lead global co-development efforts, leveraging their networks to drive adoption and create a truly inclusive and harmonized DPIS ecosystem.
